Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds: What Actually Changes (and What Doesn't)

Diamond, Decoded

Every few weeks, someone asks us the same question: "Is a lab-grown diamond basically a fake diamond?"

No. And once you see what's actually different and what isn't, the question kind of answers itself.

So what actually changes when you choose to buy lab grown diamond jewellery?

Environmental & Ethical Footprint: A mined diamond took a few billion years, forming under heat and pressure deep in the earth before being dug out. A lab-grown one is grown in weeks by using processes (CVD or HPHT) that recreate those exact same conditions, just above ground, on a much faster timeline.

The Price Tag: The most significant shift is the lab grown diamond price. Because lab-grown diamonds skip the decades of mining and supply-chain markup that mined stones carry, they typically cost less for the same size and clarity, often enough that you can go up a carat weight without changing your budget!

Everyday Luxury Access: Choosing affordable lab grown diamonds means luxury isn't reserved for once-in-a-lifetime milestones like engagement rings. You can wear diamond jewellery every day- to work, brunch, or on weekend getaways, without keeping it locked away in a safe.

But what stays exactly the same?

The Sparkle & Quality: From cut and clarity to color and carat (the 4Cs), lab-grown stones are graded by certified international gem labs (like IGI or SGL) using the exact same standards as mined diamonds.

Durability: They never lose their shine or scratch easily. They are built to last forever.

Versatility in Style: Whether you are eyeing timeless diamond rings for women or everyday stackable bands, lab-grown diamonds deliver equal elegance in fine gold or durable gold vermeil settings.

So does it matter which one you choose?

Only for the reason that matters to you.

If you want a diamond because of what it represents- the way it looks on your hand every day, not what it might fetch back in twenty years, lab-grown gives you the same stone for meaningfully less.

If rarity and geological age is the actual point for you, that's a different conversation.

Either way: it's still a diamond. Same sparkle, same shelf life, same "yes" moment.
